RED Mangrove
restoration project |

|
In
September of 2007, 18 PGIslanders signed on to help with a Sea Grant program
to restore the red mangrove shoreline which was decimated by hurricane
Charlie.
The project involved collecting, sorting, and planting
the propagules under the supervision of a Primary Investigator affiliated
with
Florida
Gulf
Coast
University.
Those members helping attended a 2 hour
orientation program.
They collected propagules from local waters and
saw that they were properly stored prior to delivering them to be painted.
A
few of our members were responsible for painting almost 6000 propagules!!!
This public service project provided an
opportunity to not only give back to our community, but also to aid in the
restoration of the natural habitat around us.
Hopefully, in a few years we will see our
efforts rewarded with a renewed red mangrove shoreline.
