Hello Islander cruisers. Thanks to all who responded to the Cruise Committee boating questionnaire. The Committee is reviewing the survey data and incorporating your ideas into cruising activities. We have also spoken to numerous Islanders about their cruising plans. Some are planning trips to the Bahamas, Florida Keys and North Florida.

We need captains for a host of more local cruises too. We hope the following list will generate interest in other opportunities of a few days to a few weeks duration. Please see if there are some that you might like to undertake. Most of these trips can be combined to make a more extensive itinerary. The list is by no means all inclusive. Many of you will know of additional fun destinations and theme ideas.

Tadpole Cruise III

February 16-18, 2012

A Tad Pole cruise is a learning experience.

Come with us on 16 February to spend a weekend anchored in Pelican Bay. We will arrive at Pelican Bay Friday afternoon, spend Saturday exploring Caya Costa Island, and return to Punta Gorda Sunday, 18 February.

This cruise will be planned as if we were traveling great distances and for an indefinite number of days. We will have a full captain's meeting, discussing the weather, optional routes, emergency safe havens, seamanship, provisioning and good cruising and anchoring practices. We will travel to a close-by location and safely anchor for two nights. In other words, have the practical experience anyone would need to go long distance cruising, in your own back yard.

With a lot of help, anyone can develop the confidence to sail the waters of Southwest Florida or the Bahamas and anchor in some of the best bays, coves, and rivers or near interesting islands. There will be enough experienced cruisers to assist in every facet of the planning and conduct of the cruise. If you have not anchored out, take this opportunity to participate in a guided cruise with other PGIslanders to one of the best anchorages on the west coast of Florida.

More information to follow.

Sign up for Tadpole Cruise III at the February meeting or by email to Tom McAlear at tom.mcalear@comcast.net.

HEDDA AND ROGER COHEN (with first mate Sadie), CRUISE CAPTAINS

Yentl
By Leah Napolin and Isaac Bashevis Singer
Based on Yentl, The Yeshiva Boy by Isaac Bashevis Singer
Directed by Gordon Greenberg
January 20-April 26

“Once you remember that these characters are young kids, you realize how powerful and frightening this time of life is for them. It’s a recipe for broken hearts, rich drama — and a lot of humor.”
—Gordon Greenberg, director of Yentl

The first new production of Isaac Bashevis Singer’s original play in more than forty years, this timeless story follows a young Jewish woman who yearns for a proper education, in a time and place when that opportunity was only open to men. Her only hope is to cut her hair and disguise herself as a boy in order to join the yeshiva. But when she falls in love, she must decide whether or not to reveal the truth. For everyone who has wanted to do something and was told they couldn’t, and for everyone who has loved the right person at the wrong time, this beautifully written play resonates with pure magic. Director Gordon Greenberg fuses this unusual love story with original, contemporary music composed by acclaimed singer/songwriter Jill Sobule. The music blends klezmer, rock, folk, and bluegrass with percussion, violin, accordion and guitar. "The original play is amazingly sexual and resonant—both politically and socially.” said Greenberg. “These are emotions that young people have experienced for centuries—and will likely continue to experience for centuries to come."
